Agartala, May 2: Over the past two days, severe storms have tragically claimed the lives of two individuals, including a five-year-old child, while injuring four others across Tripura.

The intense weather conditions have wreaked havoc, damaging nearly 4,000 homes statewide, according to officials on Friday.

Accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds, the storm caused extensive destruction to residential buildings, crops, and power infrastructure in various districts.

SK Das, the State Project Director of Disaster Management, reported that a five-year-old boy lost his life and his brother was injured when their mud house collapsed in Radhanagar, Unakoti district, on Thursday.

In another incident, a man from Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district was killed by a lightning strike on Wednesday.

Additionally, three other individuals suffered injuries from separate storm-related events, as stated by officials.

Of the 4,000 homes impacted, approximately 180 huts were completely destroyed.

The State Government has allocated Rs 79.59 lakh as immediate relief for the affected families.

To assist those in need, four relief camps have been established, providing shelter to around 243 families. Authorities confirmed that all displaced individuals have returned home as conditions have improved.

The storms also caused significant disruptions to the electricity supply, damaging 129 electric poles. Restoration efforts are currently underway, especially in remote areas.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Sepahijala and South Tripura districts on Friday, urging authorities to stay vigilant.
