Sadiya, Nov 3: A powerful storm that struck Sadiya early Tuesday morning resulted in one fatality, extensive property damage, and significant disruption to road access as fallen trees obstructed National Highway 115.

The storm hit Chapakhowa around 2 AM, uprooting numerous large trees and halting traffic on a crucial segment of NH-115, leading to severe congestion.

In the Marowapatty region of Chapakhowa, a worker named Shiva Shankar Shah tragically lost his life when a tree collapsed onto an aluminum warehouse.

Local reports indicate that Shah, a Dhola resident, is survived by his wife and two children.

Shah became trapped under the debris after the tree fell, and rescue operations were hindered by power outages and blocked roads.

A local resident recounted the chaos, stating that people rushed to the warehouse upon hearing the noise and attempted to rescue the trapped worker.

“Chapakhowa town has been devastated, with roads obstructed, electric poles down, and trees uprooted. There was a commotion at a nearby warehouse where a man was trapped. We hurried to help him, but it took us about half an hour. There was no electricity,” the resident shared.

Due to fallen trees blocking access for ambulances, locals used a private vehicle to transport Shah to the hospital.

“We took our own car to get him to the hospital. We had to wait 15-20 minutes for the doctor to arrive, but by the time he did, the man had already died,” the resident added.

It was noted that Sadiya does not have a post-mortem facility, and medical officials recommended transferring the body to Tinsukia for examination.

The fallen trees blocked nearly a kilometer of the highway, causing severe traffic disruptions and stranding many commuters.

In Tupsinga village, a family narrowly avoided disaster as the storm swept through, tearing off tin roofs and damaging homes.

A family member recounted their experience, stating that the storm hit suddenly around 2 AM, forcing them to seek refuge in a nearby house, which also sustained damage. The village head later came to evaluate the situation.

“At around 2 AM, the storm hit us hard, and the tin roofs were blown away almost instantly. We sought shelter in the nearest house, but it too was damaged. The village head came to check on the damage,” the resident explained.

The storm inflicted widespread destruction across various parts of Sadiya, affecting numerous homes and severely disrupting road connectivity.
