Severe Rainfall Causes Tragedy in Northeast India with 31 Confirmed Deaths
Heavy Rainfall Leads to Fatal Incidents in Northeast India
Recent reports indicate that the death toll from incidents related to heavy rainfall in Northeast India has risen to at least 31. These fatalities occurred due to landslides and flooding over the weekend.
In Assam, nine individuals lost their lives, with five fatalities resulting from a landslide in the Bonda region of Guwahati. Additionally, two deaths were reported after excessive water discharge from the Ranganadi dam caused severe waterlogging in several villages in Lakhimpur district.
Arunachal Pradesh also faced tragedy, with nine individuals reported dead due to landslides between Friday and Saturday. Among them, seven people perished when their vehicle was swept into a gorge on the landslide-prone National Highway 13 in East Kameng district.
Furthermore, two laborers died following a landslide triggered by continuous rainfall near the Pine Grove area along the Ziro-Kamle road in Lower Subansiri district.
In Meghalaya, six fatalities were reported over the same period, while Mizoram also recorded six deaths, including three Myanmarese nationals who died when a hotel collapsed due to a landslide.
According to the state’s directorate of information and public relations, over 100 landslides occurred across 11 districts in Mizoram.
In Nagaland, a truck driver was killed due to a rockfall on the Dimapur-Kohima highway.
All seven northeastern states have been experiencing relentless rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department predicting heavy to very heavy rain in various parts of the region.
In Sikkim, approximately 1,500 tourists found themselves stranded in multiple areas after a crucial road was blocked by landslides.
