Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Delhi-NCR

On Friday, persistent rainfall in the Delhi-NCR region led to significant flooding in various areas, causing disruptions in transportation and considerable inconvenience for residents. The continuous downpour resulted in traffic jams across multiple locations. Reports of flooding emerged from the Chhatarpur Farm area, while Sector 35 in Faridabad and other neighborhoods also faced similar issues. Long queues of vehicles were observed on major roads, and the combination of flooding and slow-moving traffic resulted in delays for commuters.

Weather Alerts Issued by IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a serious 'Red Alert' along with crucial weather advisories for several states. These warnings include expectations of heavy rainfall, sudden downpours (cloudbursts), and severe thunderstorms. The ongoing cyclonic winds and active monsoon troughs across the country have intensified the rainfall, prompting high alert statuses in the National Capital Region, northern Kerala, and coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.

Consequences of Sudden Downpour

Intense and continuous rainfall was recorded in Delhi and its satellite cities, with some areas experiencing nearly 100mm of rain. This unexpected heavy rain submerged roads, significantly slowing down the morning commute for residents in southern, eastern, and central Delhi. Major transit corridors such as ITO, the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and Rohtak Road reported severe waterlogging, forcing vehicles to navigate through deep water under flyovers and underpasses.

Flooding at Safdarjung Hospital

According to reports, rainwater has entered the premises of Safdarjung Hospital, causing difficulties for patients and their visitors. One individual accompanying a patient, Arif Khan, expressed his frustration, stating, "We are facing a lot of trouble. Water has accumulated in several areas of the hospital premises, including the gallery. It is very challenging to bring patients in and out."
