Bengaluru Faces Heavy Rain and Flooding
In Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, relentless rainfall has wreaked havoc across the city. The torrential downpour has led to significant waterlogging and flooding on the streets, causing serious disruptions to the daily lives of residents. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, predicting similar weather conditions to persist, along with a yellow alert for several regions in Karnataka.
According to a news agency, the director of the Bengaluru center at the IMD, N. Puviyarsu, stated that the orange alert was issued due to expected rainfall of 8 to 10 centimeters, which could significantly impact the metropolitan area. The IMD also forecasted the possibility of overcast skies and heavy rain or thunderstorms on Tuesday. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius, while the maximum could reach approximately 27 degrees Celsius. The weekly forecast from the weather office continues to predict "rain".
From May 21 to 23, the city is expected to experience partly cloudy skies with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Additionally, rain is anticipated on May 24 and 25. Tragically, two individuals attempting to manage flooding in a residential complex lost their lives due to electric shock caused by the heavy rains. The deceased include 63-year-old Manmohan Kamath and 12-year-old Dinesh. Despite being quickly rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, doctors pronounced them dead upon arrival.
IMD Issues Orange Alert for Bengaluru
As reported by a news agency, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru on Tuesday. Director N. Puviyarsu explained that the alert was prompted by the potential for 8 to 10 centimeters of rainfall, which could affect the capital of Karnataka. He noted, "While the rainfall may not be significant for rural areas, the concrete infrastructure in cities like Bengaluru is causing drainage pathways to become blocked, necessitating the orange alert for proper preparedness by officials." An orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall between 11 to 20 centimeters, while a yellow alert signifies heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 centimeters. The IMD has also issued orange alerts for 11 districts in Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga, Udupi, and Dharwad.
