Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Kerala

The relentless heavy rainfall across various regions of Kerala continued to wreak havoc on Sunday, uprooting trees, triggering landslides in elevated areas, and causing flooding in lower-lying regions. Fortunately, there have been no reports of significant casualties, although numerous homes and vehicles have sustained damage.

In the mountainous area of Kottakkal in Malappuram district, a landslide occurred on Saturday evening, damaging a house; however, all family members were reported safe. In Sultan Bathery in northern Wayanad and Chungam in southern Kottayam district, strong winds and heavy rain led to the uprooting of large trees, temporarily disrupting traffic.

Firefighters promptly arrived at the scene to clear the fallen trees from the roads. Locals reported that a tree fell in Nileshwaram, Kasaragod, damaging parked vehicles.

In light of the ongoing heavy rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram, the district administration has alerted residents about the plan to release water from the Neyyar Dam into the river. Officials indicated that all four shutters of the Neyyar Dam would be raised by 20 centimeters on Sunday morning, urging those living along the riverbanks to remain vigilant.
