Severe Rainfall Causes Destruction in Assam's Kamrup District

Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Kamrup
Boko, June 1: Intense rainfall accompanied by runoff from Meghalaya caused significant damage in Assam's Kamrup district on Friday night, leading to infrastructure destruction and interruptions in transport and communication.
A large section of National Highway-17 (NH-17) located in the Shingra Reserve Forest area near Boko was severely eroded due to the relentless downpour, resulting in numerous vehicles being stranded. This situation halted all vehicular traffic, particularly impacting heavy trucks that remained immobilized for more than 16 hours.
In response, the Kamrup district administration promptly arranged alternative routes through nearby villages for light vehicles, ambulances, and passenger buses. Divas Bardoloi, an officer from the Boko Revenue Circle, stated, “Repair operations are currently in progress. Meanwhile, light vehicles and emergency services are being diverted through adjacent village roads.”
The situation deteriorated further in the Chaygaon region, where the Kalahi river overflowed, damaging both sides of a bridge on Friday evening. Recognizing the urgency, Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra visited the site to evaluate the damage and supervise immediate relief efforts.
In a heartbreaking incident, one individual drowned in the Gijang river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, near Maspara village in Meghalaya, close to Hahim. The victim has been identified as Epish N Sangma.
With roads compromised, rivers overflowing, and lives lost, these events highlight the escalating effects of extreme weather in the area. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have advised residents in low-lying and riverbank regions to exercise caution.
