Severe Landslide Disrupts Mumbai-Pune Expressway Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains
Heavy Rains Cause Major Landslide on Mumbai-Pune Expressway
In Maharashtra, relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc over the past few days. A significant landslide occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early Monday morning, affecting one of the state's busiest routes. This natural disaster has blocked a crucial section near the expressway's 'missing link,' halting traffic completely on the lane heading from Pune to Mumbai. Authorities have responded by altering traffic routes and issuing an immediate travel advisory for commuters.
Details of the Landslide Incident
According to officials, the landslide took place near Tunnel 2 at the Khandala exit on the Pune to Mumbai lane amidst heavy rainfall. This incident has led to a complete standstill of traffic on one of the state's most heavily trafficked expressways.
Traffic Police Urges Travelers to Avoid the Route
The Pune traffic police have advised travelers to postpone their journeys from Pune to Mumbai until the affected area is cleared. Traffic Superintendent Shivaji Pawar stated that the connecting link from Pune to Mumbai on the expressway has been entirely shut down due to the landslide. Additionally, the old Mumbai-Pune expressway route has also been closed due to flooding, with reports of another landslide on the older highway.
Current Traffic Conditions and Cleanup Efforts
Pawar mentioned, "The road from Pune to Mumbai is completely closed. However, the lane from Mumbai to Pune remains open, albeit with slow-moving traffic. We request travelers to delay their trips from Pune to Mumbai. The administration will provide updates once the road is cleared. Those traveling from Mumbai to Pune should only do so if absolutely necessary."
Ongoing Cleanup Operations
Executive Engineer Rakesh Sonawane reported that the landslide occurred near the tunnel exit after continuous rainfall overnight. He stated, "Cleanup operations are currently underway. We expect normal traffic conditions to resume in the next four to five hours." Teams and machinery have been deployed to the site to expedite the removal of debris and restore traffic flow.
Understanding the 'Missing Link' Project
The 'missing link' is one of the most significant engineering projects on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This 13.3-kilometer stretch connects Khopoli in Raigad district to Kusgaon near Lonavala in Pune district, facilitating faster and easier travel between Mumbai and Pune. The project includes two tunnels, two large bridges, and a cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley. Tunnel 1 is approximately 1.58 kilometers long, while Tunnel 2 stretches about 8.86 kilometers, making it one of the longest road tunnels in the region. Once fully operational, the 'missing link' is expected to reduce the travel distance between Mumbai and Pune by around six kilometers and cut travel time by approximately 30 minutes.
Impact of Monsoon on Transportation in Maharashtra
The heavy rainfall over the past few days has significantly impacted daily life in Mumbai and surrounding districts, leading to issues such as flooding, landslides, and delays in road and rail transport. Authorities have advised travelers to check official traffic updates before planning intercity travel, especially on routes passing through the Western Ghats, where the risk of landslides increases during intense monsoon conditions.
