Severe Heatwave Hits India as Temperatures Soar
Extreme Heat Begins Across the Country
As March unfolds, many regions in India are experiencing intense heat. On Saturday, the temperature in the capital city, Delhi, reached 35.7 degrees Celsius, breaking a 50-year record. In Akola, Rajasthan, the mercury soared to 40.8 degrees, leaving residents struggling with the scorching sun and heat.
Heatwave Alerts Issued in Several States
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued heatwave warnings for various states. Alerts have been raised for regions in Maharashtra's Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. According to the weather department, when temperatures in the plains exceed 40 degrees and are 4-6 degrees above normal, there is an increased risk of health issues and heat-related illnesses.
Snowfall in the Mountains Offers Hope for Relief
Amidst the severe heat, there is a glimmer of hope. The activation of a Western Disturbance is expected to change the weather in hilly areas between March 8 and 12. Light rain and snowfall are anticipated in the higher regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, which may lead to a slight drop in temperatures.
Weather Conditions in Other States
In addition to the mountains, light rain is also expected in Sikkim, Odisha, and Kerala. Meanwhile, some areas in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh may experience a bit of relief from the heat in the coming days. Currently, due to the possibility of snowfall in regions like Kupwara and Anantnag in the Kashmir Valley, both tourists and locals are advised to exercise caution.
