Intense Heatwave in Northern India
North India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for Rajasthan on Friday, indicating that hot winds are expected to sweep through various regions, particularly in western and northern Rajasthan, over the next two to three days. The forecast suggests that extreme heat and warm nights will persist during this period.
According to the weather department, the maximum temperature recorded in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, reached 47.8 degrees Celsius. In a conversation with a news agency, Radheyshyam Sharma, the director of the meteorological center in Jaipur, stated, "In the last 24 hours, temperatures have risen by 1-2 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state. The conditions for heat, severe heat, and warm nights are likely to continue for the next 2-3 days, especially in certain areas of western and northern Rajasthan. The highest temperature recorded was 47.8 degrees Celsius in Sri Ganganagar."
He further mentioned, "Pre-monsoon activities are expected to commence in some parts of the state within the next 24 to 48 hours. Over the past two days, monsoon activities have already increased. Conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance into parts of eastern and central India in the coming days. We will also observe this in Rajasthan. Therefore, pre-monsoon activities are expected to increase in some areas of eastern Rajasthan from June 15, leading to a drop in temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius."
On Thursday, the IMD indicated that after several days of extreme heat, there is a gradual likelihood of relief from the heatwave in northwestern India starting June 14. Severe heat conditions were recorded in parts of western Rajasthan, with some areas experiencing extremely high temperatures. Hot winds were also reported in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, parts of Himachal Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, southern Uttar Pradesh, and northwestern Madhya Pradesh.
In its temperature forecast, the IMD stated that no significant changes are expected in northwestern and central India over the next three days, followed by a gradual decline of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, IMD officials reported that western Rajasthan, particularly Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Bikaner, is experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 47 degrees Celsius. This heat is expected to persist for three to four days.
Sharma added, "Dusty and strong southwesterly winds will blow in the region for the next two to three days. Thunderstorm activities may occur in eastern Rajasthan on June 15-16, which could provide some relief from the heat. A drop in temperatures is anticipated around June 18-20 due to thunderstorm activities in eastern Rajasthan." An orange alert was issued for Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh on June 10, while a yellow warning was issued for Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli, and Dholpur.
