Severe Flooding Threatens Gauripur Residents as Tipkai River Swells

The residents of Gauripur are currently facing a dire situation as the Tipkai river swells due to continuous rainfall, leading to significant flooding. Over 20 homes have been lost, and vast agricultural areas are submerged, particularly affecting jute farmers. The community has long struggled with inadequate flood protection measures, prompting locals to construct their own embankments. With religious sites also at risk, citizens are calling on the state government for immediate action to address the ongoing flooding and implement necessary anti-erosion strategies. The situation remains critical as the region braces for further monsoon challenges.

Flooding Crisis in Gauripur

Gauripur, July 18: The Tipkai river is currently endangering the lives of residents in Gauripur LAC, as relentless rainfall has led to rising water levels, inundating both agricultural land and homes.

Reports indicate that the situation has become critical in the Baghmara and Baraibari regions, where over 20 houses along the riverbank have been swept away by floodwaters, creating significant distress for the local population.

Additionally, vast stretches of farmland are submerged, particularly affecting jute farmers who are experiencing substantial crop losses due to the flooding, as most of their fields are now underwater.

Residents of Baghmara and Baraibari have faced this recurring issue for years, largely due to the absence of effective anti-erosion initiatives from previous administrations.

Gauripur, known for its religious sites, is also grappling with the threat of erosion affecting these establishments. Citizens have expressed concerns, stating, “If appropriate measures are not implemented, the situation could deteriorate further.”

In light of the ongoing crisis, locals have urged the state government to take immediate action to address the persistent flooding and implement anti-erosion strategies to safeguard those living near the Tipkai river.

The recent floods have reignited worries about the area's long-standing susceptibility to erosion and the lack of adequate flood defenses.

Last year, residents from Baghmara and nearby villages took matters into their own hands by constructing a 1.3-km earthen embankment after their requests for anti-erosion measures went unanswered.

Villagers pooled their resources and labor to shield their homes, farmland, and essential infrastructure from the Tipkai river, emphasizing that without permanent flood-control solutions, the region will remain vulnerable during each monsoon season.
