Severe Flooding in Dhemaji: Residents Face Dire Shortages
Impact of Flooding in Dhemaji District
Dhemaji, July 5: Families affected by flooding in the Jonai revenue circle of Dhemaji district are grappling with severe shortages of food, clean drinking water, fodder, and other vital supplies.
While floodwaters are beginning to recede in the impacted areas, residents continue to face challenges due to water-logged fields, damaged roads, and muddy agricultural lands.
The flash floods, triggered by overflowing rivers, have submerged homes, agricultural fields, and vegetable gardens, leading to the loss of livestock and household belongings. Additionally, rural roads have been compromised, and standing crops have been destroyed.
Although the district administration is distributing food and relief supplies to those affected, these provisions are insufficient to meet the basic needs required for families to return to normalcy.
Residents in the impacted villages are reportedly suffering from a lack of food, a critical shortage of drinking water, and essential items, along with fodder for their livestock.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has criticized both the State and Central governments, led by the BJP, for their inadequate response to the needs of flood-affected families in Dhemaji.
During a visit to the severely impacted Arun Chapori (Telam) area in Jonai on Friday, APCC president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, along with other party officials, engaged with affected families.
Gogoi highlighted that individuals in relief camps are in desperate need of food, drinking water, and other essential supplies, urging the State government to act swiftly to address these needs.
He further criticized the BJP-led central government, noting that while Rs 232 crore has been allocated for relief and rehabilitation over the past seven years, the State's request stands at approximately Rs 800 crore.
