Severe Flooding in Bihar Affects Over 5 Million Residents Across 15 Districts
Current Flood Situation in Bihar
Patna: The flood situation in Bihar remains critical, impacting more than 5 million individuals across 15 districts. Floodwaters have reached numerous gram panchayats, with the state disaster management department reporting that as of September 23, 2026, approximately 50.49 lakh people are affected. A total of 576 gram panchayats have been reported as impacted.
Rising River Levels Contributing to Flooding
The increasing water levels in rivers are a significant factor exacerbating the flood situation. Reports indicate that the Kosi River is flowing above the danger mark at Balatara and Kursela, while the Ganges has surpassed the danger level at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur. This has heightened the difficulties for residents in riverside areas.
Impact on Local Communities
Previously, several regions in the state had also recorded rising water levels in the Ganges and other rivers. The continuous rise in water has led to flooding in low-lying areas, causing transportation issues.
The districts affected by the floods include Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnia, Madhepura, and Arwal. A large population in these areas is struggling with the consequences of the flooding.
Relief and Rescue Operations Underway
Due to the floods, many individuals have been forced to relocate to safer areas. Accumulated water around homes has disrupted daily life and made travel in rural areas challenging.
The administration is conducting relief operations to provide food and essential assistance to those affected. Six relief camps have been established, accommodating 7,714 displaced individuals. Additionally, community kitchens are supplying meals to flood-affected residents.
Deployment of Rescue Teams
For rescue efforts, 27 teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 8 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed. Authorities have also stationed 391 boats for rescue operations.
Weather Alerts Issued
According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rainfall is expected in various parts of Bihar from September 23 to 26, with some areas potentially experiencing heavy rain. This has raised concerns among the administration and residents in flood-affected regions.
Focus on Safety and Recovery
Currently, the administration is concentrating on relocating affected individuals to safe locations, providing food and medical services, and closely monitoring water levels. A comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the floods will only be possible once the water recedes.
