Severe Flooding in Assam Claims More Lives as Affected Population Surges

Flood Situation Worsens in Assam

Guwahati, August 5 - The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated significantly on Wednesday, with the death toll rising to 95 following the loss of six more lives. The number of individuals affected across 14 districts has now reached 160,000, according to an official bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that the fatalities occurred within the last 24 hours due to flooding.

According to the bulletin, two individuals drowned in the floodwaters in both Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, while one person each lost their life in Golaghat and Morigaon. This brings the total number of deaths attributed to this year's floods to 95. The daily flood report from the authority indicates that over 160,600 people remain affected in districts including Biswanath, Charadeiv, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri.

Sivasagar has emerged as the most severely impacted district, with over 57,000 individuals affected. Following closely are Golaghat with approximately 34,000 and Jorhat with 25,000 affected residents. The flood situation has worsened since Tuesday.

On that day, more than 122,000 people were affected across five districts. ASDMA has reported that the administration is operating 105 relief camps and distribution centers across six districts, currently providing assistance to 44,523 affected individuals. In the last 24 hours, the authority distributed 528.44 quintals of rice, 126.72 quintals of lentils, 73.21 quintals of salt, and 2,519.64 liters of mustard oil to those impacted by the floods.

ASDMA noted that currently, 563 villages in Assam are submerged, and 16,951.76 hectares of agricultural land have suffered damage. Floodwaters have also caused harm to embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure across various districts. The Dhansiri River is currently flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh.

The extensive flooding has also affected 35,025 domestic animals and poultry, with 8,529 others reported missing.
