Severe Flooding in Assam Claims 61 Lives, Over 700,000 Affected

On July 24, the flood situation in Assam remained extremely critical. The death toll has risen to 61 following the loss of 14 more lives in the last 24 hours, with over 705,000 individuals affected across nine districts. According to a bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the latest fatalities include seven in the Charaideo district, six in Sivasagar, and one in Jorhat due to drowning.

With these recent deaths, the total number of lives lost to flooding this year has reached 61. The ASDMA report indicates that more than 705,100 people have been impacted in the districts of Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. Sivasagar has been the hardest-hit district, with approximately 350,000 residents affected.

Following Sivasagar, Charaideo has seen around 190,000 people impacted, while Jorhat has reported 130,000 affected individuals. Previously, on Thursday, over 721,000 people were reported to be affected across 11 districts. The ASDMA has stated that the administration is operating 363 relief camps and distribution centers in seven districts, providing shelter to 115,205 displaced individuals.
