Severe Flooding in Assam Claims 21 Lives Amid Ongoing Rainfall

Tragic Toll from Assam Floods

Guwahati, July 22 – Assam has been grappling with relentless rainfall, leading to devastating floods that resulted in the deaths of 21 more individuals on Wednesday, affecting approximately 565,000 residents.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the latest flood report released at midnight on Tuesday indicates that over 564,600 people across various districts, including Vishwanath, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia, have been impacted by the flooding.

The report highlights that in the last 24 hours, 13 individuals, including four women and two children, drowned in floodwaters in Sivasagar district. Additionally, five people, including two children, lost their lives in Charaideo, while two fatalities were reported in Golaghat and one woman in Jorhat.

With these recent casualties, the total number of flood-related deaths in the state this year has risen to 31.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Assam, forecasting heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in certain areas over the next four days.

Impact of Flooding and Government Response

The yellow alert signifies the need for vigilance and monitoring of updates regarding the situation. Sivasagar is the most severely affected district, with around 360,000 individuals impacted, followed by Jorhat with approximately 88,000 and Charaideo with over 72,500 residents affected.

The flood situation has worsened compared to Monday night when about 363,000 people were reported affected across 15 districts. Rescue operations have been underway, with the army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire and emergency services, police, and other civilian agencies successfully evacuating over 6,000 individuals from various areas in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar.
