Severe Flooding in Afghanistan's Nuristan Province Claims Lives and Leaves Many Missing

Kabul, July 21: Recent reports indicate that floods in Parun city, located in Afghanistan's Nuristan province, have resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, with over 80 others sustaining injuries, according to local media sources.
The Taliban authorities have released a statement highlighting that more than 100 individuals remain unaccounted for following the devastating floods in Parun and surrounding regions.
The National Disaster Management Authority, managed by the Taliban, reported that the severe flooding has caused extensive damage and loss of life in Parun and other areas within Nuristan.
Hafiz Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the spokesperson for the authority, mentioned that specialized teams have been deployed to assess the situation, search for missing persons, and evaluate the extent of the destruction.
The floods have resulted in significant damage to homes, agricultural land, and businesses, leading to substantial financial losses. Hamad noted that the casualty figures may rise as ongoing search and rescue efforts continue in the affected regions.
With over 100 individuals reported missing, there are growing concerns that the death toll may increase as rescue teams persist in their search for survivors and those potentially swept away by the floods, as reported by Khaama Press.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall in parts of Nuristan, where the mountainous terrain and limited access to roads complicate rescue operations.
Afghanistan is particularly susceptible to extreme weather events, including floods, landslides, and droughts.
In May, severe thunderstorms and strong winds resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to 11 others across several provinces, including Kandahar, Herat, Ghor, and Takhar.
The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) reported that the storms caused destruction to roads, wells, agricultural land, trees, and hundreds of solar panels, according to Tolo News.
ANDMA spokesperson Mohammad Yousuf Hamad stated, "Six individuals lost their lives, and 11 were injured due to thunderstorms, lightning, and floods in Kandahar, Herat, Takhar, and Ghor provinces. Twenty homes were completely destroyed, while ten others suffered partial damage."
