Severe Flooding Hits Sribhumi District Amid Heavy Rainfall

Flooding Crisis in Sribhumi

Sribhumi, 1 June: Continuous heavy rainfall over recent days has led to a significant rise in water levels across the tributaries of the Kushiyara, Singla, and Longai rivers, resulting in breaches of embankments in various locations within Sribhumi district.

The situation is particularly dire in the villages located in the Nilambazar, Ramkrishnanagar, and Patherkandi revenue circles, prompting local authorities to accelerate renovation efforts, especially on the embankments of the overflowing rivers.

Substantial portions of the embankments along the Longai and Singla rivers have already been inundated, causing concern among the local population.

Currently, nearly 200 villages face the threat of flooding if the embankments collapse completely, as water levels in the Kushiyara, Singla, and Longai rivers continue to rise.

Minister Krishnendu Paul, along with District Commissioner Pradip Kumar Dwibedi and senior officials from the flood control department, inspected the damaged embankments and the flood-affected regions within the Patherkandi circle.

Official reports indicate that the Longai River has breached several areas, including Dholcherra, Gandhaimukh, and Patherkandi, leading to the submersion of over 25 villages.

The flood control department has confirmed that the Kushiyara, Singla, and Longai rivers are currently flowing above the danger threshold.

In a tragic incident, a 50-year-old man named Islam Uddin lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in the Anandapur area on Saturday. His body was recovered by Ramkrishnanagar Police, with help from local residents, on Sunday morning. Reports suggest that he was en route to the market when he was caught in the strong current.
