Flood in Jonai

DHEMAJI, June 22: Recent heavy rainfall in the Jonai region of Dhemaji and the adjacent Siang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh has resulted in significant flooding and erosion across various rural areas within the Jonai revenue circle.

The rising waters of the Depi River, which flows through the Gali Panchayat area, have been causing extensive erosion in Galighat, impacting numerous acres of land where people reside.

Reports indicate that the strong river currents have eroded several homes in Galighat, leaving nine families without shelter. These families are currently residing in temporary huts constructed on the river dyke.

Additionally, the overflowing Sille River has submerged residential areas in Malbhug and Shantipur within the Bahir Jonai panchayat, creating a challenging situation for local inhabitants.

In response, Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu, along with the local circle officer and PRL leaders, visited the affected regions on Sunday to assess the damage. He directed the Jonai sub-divisional administration to supply essential relief materials and facilitate the rehabilitation of those displaced. Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities due to the flash floods in the district.
