Severe Flooding Hits Geleki, Assam: Residents Face Crisis
Flood Crisis in Geleki, Assam
The flood situation worsened on Sunday following incessant rainfall and a sharp rise in the Doikhana River's water level.
Nazira/Jorhat, July 19: Geleki in Assam's Nazira is currently facing severe flooding, affecting numerous villages and disrupting road access. Residents are struggling to find food and clean drinking water after a newly built embankment along the Doikhana River failed.
The situation deteriorated on Sunday due to continuous rainfall and a significant increase in the water level of the Doikhana River.
The breach of the embankment has led to extensive flooding in the area, with Lahon Gaon, Moran Gaon, Charaisajiya, and Singibil being among the hardest hit.
Local inhabitants reported that large sections of Geleki are submerged, with floodwaters affecting homes, farmland, and tea plantations owned by small-scale tea growers.
One resident shared, "Currently, the water level at Geleki Chariali is knee-deep. Almost every village is affected. The entire region is underwater, including paddy fields and tea gardens."
The flooding has completely disrupted road connectivity, isolating many villages. Residents noted that water from neighboring Nagaland, combined with the relentless rain, has intensified the crisis.
Another local stated, "The entire Geleki area is suffering from floods. It has been raining since yesterday, worsening the situation. Approximately 40 villages are affected, impacting over one lakh residents in the region."
This resident called on the government to evacuate families trapped in low-lying areas and to provide urgent assistance.
According to locals, the local Circle Officer visited the affected regions to evaluate the situation, but no official statement from the government had been released at the time of this report.
This recent flooding follows a previous incident in Geleki involving the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) oilfield in Sivasagar district, where a gas leak was reported. Although the company claimed the leak was contained, gas escaped from a pit near a health camp site on Saturday, causing panic among residents.
