Severe Flooding Hits Assam: Rivers Overflow Amid Heavy Rainfall

Flood Situation in Nagaon District

Nagaon, June 1: The Kapili River has surpassed its danger level in the Kampur, Kachua, and Raha regions due to significant rainfall over the last two days. An official report indicates that water from the Borapani River has inundated paddy fields across 27 villages within the Kachua and Kampur revenue circles.

In light of the serious situation, local authorities have issued a red alert and advised residents near the riverbanks to remain cautious as the Kapili River's water level has been rising since morning. Reports indicate severe erosion near the Garokhanda embankment, with a large area of Kampur at risk of flooding tonight. The Kopili Hydro Electric Project has opened seven sluice gates to manage excess water, contributing to flooding in various parts of the district.

Impact on Tinsukia District

Doomdooma: Rising water levels in several rivers across Tinsukia district have led to significant flooding. The Kordoiguri area has been particularly affected, with numerous villages in the Doomdooma Revenue Circle submerged. Reports indicate that a student, Suman Moran, has gone missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Kordoiguri under the Baghjan Police Station.

Erosion has already impacted several homes in No. 3 Kordoiguri (Gariating), and the road connecting Dhulijan and Hatisal-Borgora villages is currently underwater. The Talap-Kordoiguri region, part of the newly established Makum and Sadiya Legislative Assembly constituencies, has faced severe erosion from the Aranta Nalo (Dangri River) for nearly thirty years.

Hailakandi Hospital Affected

Hailakandi: Heavy rainfall has led to flooding at SK Roy Civil Hospital, disrupting outpatient services due to waterlogging. Monika Das, the District Media Expert of the National Health Mission in Hailakandi, reported that the OPD services have been affected since morning, with water also entering the x-ray and CT scan rooms. Hospital staff are working to remove the water.

Areas such as Matijuri point, Silchar Road, Public School Road, Ashram Road, and others have experienced significant waterlogging, prompting residents to call for immediate improvements to the drainage system across all 16 municipal wards.

Flooding in Goalpara District

Goalpara: Continuous heavy rains have resulted in widespread flooding in low-lying areas across various revenue circles, including Balijana, Dudhnoi, Lakhipar, Matia, and Rongjuli. Fortunately, there have been no reports of affected revenue villages or displaced residents.

Traffic on the Salpara stretch of National Highway 17 near Krishna was temporarily halted on the night of May 30 due to flooding, but the road has since been repaired, allowing vehicular movement to resume. The latest updates indicate that water levels in major rivers like the Dudhnoi and Krishnai are gradually decreasing, although the Brahmaputra River is currently rising at 33.62 meters. Floodwaters have caused some damage to infrastructure within the district.

District Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury visited the site of ongoing mound construction near the Dudhnoi River, which aims to prevent river erosion using geo-hags from Tengebari to Sarapara and Hamulpora to Nandewwur.
