Severe Flooding Hits Assam as Rivers Exceed Warning Levels

New Delhi, July 7: Three river locations in Assam are currently experiencing a "critical flood situation," with 19 sites nationwide surpassing alert thresholds, as reported in the latest flood bulletin from the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Monday.
In Assam, the Dhansiri (South) River at Golaghat and Numaligarh, along with the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district, are under severe flood conditions. Overall, seven rivers in Assam have exceeded warning levels at various monitoring stations.
In Numaligarh, numerous residents are impacted by flooding in multiple areas, with many trapped in their homes. The Dhansiri River breached a sluice gate at Kenduguri, leading to extensive flooding.
Outside Assam, flood risks are also rising in other regions of the country. Four river sites in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Bihar and Odisha, and one in Madhya Pradesh are reported to be experiencing above-normal flood conditions.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaghra River at Elgin Bridge and Ayodhya, as well as the Ganga River at Farrukhabad and Badaun, have surpassed warning levels. Bihar is facing rising water levels in the Burhi Gandak and Kosi rivers.
According to the CWC bulletin, the total number of sites exceeding warning levels has reached 19.
With forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall for northeastern and eastern India in the coming days, the flood situation may worsen. The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur.
