Severe Flooding Hits Arunachal Pradesh Amid Heavy Rainfall

Flooding Crisis in Lower Subansiri and Kayi Panior Districts

In Arunachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall has led to sudden flooding in the Lower Subansiri and Kayi Panior districts, inundating numerous villages and damaging homes and agricultural land. The state has experienced intense rainfall over the past few days, resulting in landslides and flash floods across several districts, which have adversely affected roads, bridges, and other essential infrastructure.

Five Individuals Reported Missing

Reports indicate that five individuals are missing following flash floods near the NEEPCO project colony in Pusa, Yazali Circle. According to Tokto Tutung, the local MLA from the Yachuli constituency, officials are monitoring the situation in the affected areas, and search and rescue operations are underway. Tutung mentioned that around 6 AM today, a cloudburst occurred in Kayi Panior district, causing several water bodies to swell and resulting in severe flooding. The sudden deluge has caused significant damage, particularly in the NEEPCO colony. While there are no confirmed fatalities yet, five people remain unaccounted for, and rescue efforts are ongoing. Additionally, a bridge in the area has been washed away, with at least 50 homes reported destroyed.

Rainfall Measurements

According to data from regional meteorological centers in Itanagar, approximately 72.8 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Yazali station in Lower Subansiri district over a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning. Most of this rainfall occurred between 6 AM and 9 AM on Wednesday. Satellite and radar imagery indicate that heavy rain fell between 6 AM and 7:30 AM, leading to flash floods and a significant increase in river flows in the upper catchment areas. Disaster management officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas and along riverbanks to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
