Flood Impact in Manipur
Imphal, Jun 2: Flooding in Manipur has impacted more than 19,000 residents as rivers overflowed, breaching their banks.
Numerous areas in Imphal, including parts of Imphal East district, have been submerged following the breach of embankments in Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon.
The relentless rains over the past four days have resulted in damage to over 3,000 homes, affecting a total of 19,811 individuals.
Authorities have established 31 relief camps primarily in Imphal East, evacuating residents from their homes in Heingang, Wangkhei, and Khurai assembly constituencies, as well as in Senapati district.
Additionally, 47 landslides have been reported across various regions of the state during this period.
Waterlogging has occurred at several offices and health facilities, including the All India Radio Imphal complex and the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, due to the overflow of the Imphal river in Checkon.
Patients receiving treatment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Porompat were relocated to other hospitals on Sunday evening as floodwaters inundated the facility.
Local clubs, volunteers, and personnel from the SDRF and NDRF collaborated to assist in moving patients from the affected female orthopaedic and surgery wards located on the ground floor.
Manipur's Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, toured several flooded areas in Imphal while army and Assam Rifles personnel rescued nearly 800 individuals from submerged regions in Imphal East, the district most severely impacted.
Accompanied by Chief Secretary PK Singh and other senior officials, Bhalla assessed the situation in areas such as Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge, according to a statement from the Raj Bhawan.
Due to the ongoing rainfall, the governor announced an extension of the summer vacation for schools in Imphal East and West districts, as well as the Senapati sub-division, until further notice.
Troops from the Assam Rifles have been deployed with rapid response teams to the hardest-hit areas, including Porompat, Wankhei, Sanjenthong, Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai Heikrumakhong Heinang, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, and Nongmeibung Raj Bari in Imphal East and surrounding regions.
In related news, Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has requested the governor to declare the flood situation a "state calamity."
In a letter addressed to Bhalla, Akoijam emphasized that such a declaration would facilitate the activation of necessary institutional measures to address the current crisis.
