Severe Flood Crisis in Assam Claims More Lives Amid Ongoing Monsoon

Flood Situation Worsens in Assam

On Wednesday, the flood crisis in Assam intensified, with reports indicating six additional fatalities in the last 24 hours. This brings the total death toll during the monsoon season to 95. Data from the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) reveals that both rural and urban areas across several districts are grappling with severe flooding. Among the latest casualties, five were linked to general flood conditions, with two deaths each reported in Bishwanath and Sivasagar, and one in Golaghat.

Urban Flooding and Missing Persons

In the Mayong revenue circle of Morigaon district, urban flooding has resulted in another death. Authorities have also reported a missing person from Udalguri. The Dhansiri (S) River in Numaligarh remains above the danger mark, prompting heightened alertness across 14 districts, including Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Charadeiv, Sivasagar, Bishwanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup (M), Jorhat, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Darrang, Karbi Anglong, and Udalguri.

Impact on Villages and Infrastructure

The latest wave of flooding has affected over 160,000 individuals across 563 villages. Sivasagar remains the most impacted district, with more than 57,000 people affected, followed by Golaghat and Jorhat. The flooding has also caused significant damage to infrastructure. According to DRIMS, there have been seven major incidents of embankment breaches, including five in Brahmaputra of Bishwanath and two in Mangaldoi of Darrang. Reports indicate damage to a steel bridge in Cholapothar of Charadeiv and a footbridge in Tangla of Udalguri.

Agricultural and Livestock Damage

Agriculture continues to suffer, with 16,951 hectares of farmland submerged. The livestock sector has also faced severe losses, with over 35,000 animals affected and approximately 8,500 animals, mostly from Sivasagar, reported lost. Urban flooding remains a concern in several areas, including Guwahati. In Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, and Jorhat, urban flooding has impacted 734 individuals. Rescue teams from SDRF and DDRF utilized boats to evacuate 80 people from flood-affected areas like Satgaon and Hatigaon in Kamrup (M).
