Severe Flash Floods Disrupt Life in Himachal Pradesh
Kullu and Mandi Districts Face Major Impact
On Sunday, heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, leading to flash floods and landslides that severely affected several districts. The Kullu region, particularly Pah Nala, along with various areas in Mandi district, experienced significant damage as overflowing streams and debris inundated homes, markets, and roadways.
Widespread Damage in Mandi District
Floodwaters from Nagwain to Aut caused extensive destruction. The torrential flow of water brought mud and debris into the Takoli vegetable market and obstructed the four-lane highway, halting traffic completely. The main wholesale market in the area suffered a collapse as floodwaters and silt invaded shops and storage facilities.
Impact of Cloudbursts and Flash Floods
Intense overnight rainfall triggered cloudbursts in Aut tehsil, leading to flash floods that affected Panarsa, Takoli, and Nagwain. These floods damaged homes, vehicles, and public infrastructure, with debris sliding down slopes and blocking roads and residential areas.
Vehicles Buried and Homes Affected
More than ten vehicles were either buried under debris or swept away. Residents reported having little time to react as water and mud surged into their homes.
Severe Conditions in Kullu District
A cloudburst in Mohal Khud exacerbated the situation in Kullu, leading to the closure of the old National Highway between Mohal and Kullu for several hours due to a thick layer of debris and mud.
Destruction of Company Property
In Saranala, Aut tehsil, a powerful stream damaged the office and residential area of a construction company, causing boundary walls to collapse. Employees managed to escape, but the company faced significant financial losses, and nearby families lost their possessions as floodwaters invaded their homes.
Authorities Respond to the Crisis
ASP Sachin Hirematt reported multiple flooding incidents along the Mandi–Kullu section of the Chandigarh–Manali highway, especially in Panarsa, Takoli, and Nagwain. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties, and rescue teams are actively working to clear debris and restore traffic.
Weather Warnings Issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of rivers and streams.
Monsoon's Toll on Himachal Pradesh
This monsoon season has been particularly deadly for the state, with official reports indicating that 261 lives have been lost, 36 individuals are still missing, and damages have surpassed ₹2,144 crore, affecting roads, bridges, homes, shops, and livestock.
