Severe Weather Conditions in Delhi

On Saturday evening, parts of Delhi experienced intense dust storms accompanied by strong winds. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for the capital, warning of severe storms, lightning, hail, and rainfall. According to the IMD, there is a likelihood of severe storms following the dust storms in several areas of central, northeastern, southwestern, western, northwestern, and northern Delhi. This weather system could lead to lightning strikes, hail, and light to moderate rainfall, with wind speeds reaching between 70 to 90 km/h, and gusts potentially hitting 100 km/h.

Forecast for Rain and Thunderstorms

The department has also predicted moderate storms with lightning and light to moderate rain in districts including Shahdara and New Delhi, as well as southeastern, eastern, central, northeastern, southern, southwestern, western, northwestern, and northern Delhi. Wind speeds in these areas are expected to range from 40 to 60 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h in some locations. Light rain may also occur in parts of South Delhi.

Yellow Alert Issued for Sunday

For Sunday, the weather department has issued a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of similar conditions. The maximum temperature is expected to drop to around 34-36 degrees Celsius by Saturday. The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during storms, avoid seeking shelter under trees, keep away from weak structures, and unplug electrical devices to prevent lightning strikes.

Cause of Sudden Weather Change

Meteorologists attribute this sudden change in weather to an active western disturbance over northwestern India and the associated cyclonic circulation, which has increased moisture levels and atmospheric instability across the region. Following several days of extreme heat in the capital, this rainfall is anticipated to provide temporary relief from the ongoing heat. Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below the seasonal average, while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 36 degrees Celsius.
