Chilly Conditions in the Capital

On Thursday morning, residents of the national capital faced biting cold, with the lowest temperature of the year recorded at 5.8 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department.


This temperature marks the third lowest minimum recorded this season, as per the department's data.


In Safdarjung, the mercury dropped to 5.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.1 degrees below the normal range, making it the third lowest minimum temperature of this winter season. Meanwhile, Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius, falling 1.7 degrees below normal.


Temperature Records Across the City

The minimum temperature at Lodhi Road was noted at 6.1 degrees Celsius, while both Ridge and Ayanagar reported temperatures of 5.8 degrees Celsius. By 8:30 AM, no rainfall had been recorded in the city over the past 24 hours.


The lowest minimum temperature this season was previously observed on December 4 and 5, when it dropped to 5.6 degrees Celsius. On December 1, the minimum temperature was 5.7 degrees Celsius, making Thursday's reading of 5.8 degrees Celsius the third lowest so far this winter.


First Cold Day of the Year

The first cold day of the year in Delhi was noted on January 6, when the maximum temperature fell to 15.7 degrees Celsius, which is 3.3 degrees below the seasonal average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.6 degrees Celsius, 0.7 degrees below normal.


The severe cold continued to affect the capital on Wednesday, with a maximum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius, which is 2.3 degrees below normal, and a minimum temperature of 8.6 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees below the seasonal average.


Forecast for Continued Cold Weather

The meteorological department has indicated that Thursday will also experience extreme cold, with maximum temperatures expected to hover around 15 degrees Celsius.


A cold day is officially declared when the minimum temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature falls approximately 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal.
