Severe Cold and Pollution Persist in Delhi-NCR Amid Preparations for Republic Day

Harsh Weather Conditions in Delhi-NCR

The Delhi-NCR region is currently grappling with intense cold and ongoing pollution issues. Residents woke up on Sunday to frigid, icy winds and dense fog. Visibility was significantly reduced in various parts of the city due to the fog, impacting traffic conditions. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, the average air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 248, categorizing it as 'poor'. However, the situation is even more critical in several hotspots across the city.

Air Quality Deteriorates in Key Areas

At major monitoring stations in the capital, air quality has reached 'very poor' levels. Areas such as Anand Vihar (350), Rohini (361), Chandni Chowk (355), and Mundka (329) are experiencing severe breathing difficulties. In contrast, regions like NSIT Dwarka and Indira Gandhi International Airport reported slightly better air quality, with an AQI of 177. The meteorological department indicated that the minimum temperature in Delhi dropped to 9 degrees Celsius on Sunday, exacerbating the chill.

Preparations for Republic Day Continue Despite Adverse Weather

Despite the haze of pollution and smog, preparations for the Republic Day parade at India Gate are in full swing. Rehearsals and other arrangements are ongoing, undeterred by the fog. Meteorologists predict that the maximum temperature will range between 18 to 19 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will hover around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist for the foreseeable future.

Cold Wave Alert Issued for Northern and Central India

The meteorological department has also issued a 'cold wave' alert for northern and central India. A further drop in temperatures and continued dense fog is anticipated in the upcoming days. In the hilly states, light rain and snowfall are expected on January 5 and 6 in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Muzaffarabad, while Himachal Pradesh may see rain on January 6. This activity in the mountains will directly influence the cold conditions in the plains.
