Severe Cold and Fog Persist in Uttar Pradesh: Weather Alert Issued
Weather Conditions in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow, January 5, 2026: A dual assault of fog and cold continues to grip Uttar Pradesh this Sunday. The cold has intensified due to snowfall in the mountains and the influence of a western disturbance. Areas from Noida to Gorakhpur are experiencing a cold day scenario, with daytime temperatures significantly below normal levels. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense to very dense fog is expected to blanket most districts in the state, leading to severely reduced visibility.
In light of the cold and fog conditions, alerts have been issued for several districts in western Uttar Pradesh. Minimum temperatures in cities like Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Varanasi are recorded around 6-8 degrees Celsius. The maximum daytime temperature is also projected to remain between 15-18 degrees, contributing to the chill. The IMD has warned that fog will be so dense during the morning and night that visibility could drop to between 50-200 meters, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air traffic.
Due to the cold weather, school holidays have been extended in the state. Many districts have closed schools up to class 12 today to protect students from the severe morning chill and fog. Health experts advise that elderly individuals, children, and those with respiratory issues should exercise caution when going outside and wear masks, as the fog is also deteriorating air quality.
The IMD forecasts that this cold and foggy spell will persist in Uttar Pradesh for the next few days. Following the weakening of the western disturbance, westerly winds may strengthen, further increasing the chill. Residents are urged to wear warm clothing, seek warmth from bonfires, and avoid unnecessary travel.
