Weather Update for Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, January 4, 2026: Uttar Pradesh continues to experience extreme cold and dense fog. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that the cold wave, accompanied by fog, is expected to intensify in the coming days. Many districts in the state are recording minimum temperatures significantly below normal, impacting daily life.

Today's Weather Conditions

  • Dense to very dense fog will blanket most parts of the state during the morning and night hours.

  • The fog's impact in western UP is expected to last until January 5, while eastern UP may experience it until January 8.

  • Visibility in several districts may drop to between 50-200 meters, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air traffic.

  • Cold northwestern winds will exacerbate the chill. Starting January 4, an increase in wind speed may provide slight relief, but the cold will persist.

Approximate Temperatures in Major Cities

  • Lucknow: Minimum 8-9°C, Maximum 14-16°C

  • Kanpur: Minimum 4-6°C

  • Agra: Around 8°C minimum

  • Barabanki/Hardoi: Minimum down to 6°C

  • Gorakhpur (eastern UP): Minimum 6-7°C

Cold day conditions persist in various regions, where the sun fails to emerge even during the day, maintaining the chill.

IMD's Advisory

  • Yellow Alert: Dense fog and cold wave warnings for several districts.

  • A further drop of 2-3°C in minimum temperatures is possible in the coming days.

  • It is advised for the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues to exercise caution when going outside. Wearing masks and using bonfires for warmth is recommended.

  • Drivers are urged to operate vehicles at reduced speeds in foggy conditions and to use fog lights.

Impact: The dense fog has increased the risk of accidents on highways. Many trains and flights are running late. To combat the cold, the administration has set up night shelters.
