Incident Overview

Aizawl, Dec 16: Authorities have apprehended seven individuals associated with a Village Defence Party (VDP) and placed them in judicial custody following the tragic death of a 49-year-old man in Farkawn village, located near the Mizoram-Myanmar border in Champhai district.

The victim, identified as C Lalramenga, was reportedly attacked by VDP members on Saturday night after returning from Myanmar.

Reports indicate that Lalramenga had crossed into Myanmar earlier that day and returned the same evening, when local vigilantes stopped him on suspicions of liquor smuggling.

Sources reveal that local authorities confiscated country liquor from him, leading to an interrogation by the VDP members. He was subsequently transported back to his home in a vehicle, where he was found dead around 5 am on Sunday.

Fearing foul play, Lalramenga's family filed a first information report with the police, claiming he had been subjected to torture. Police teams from Dungtlang Police Station and Champhai town quickly arrived at the scene and detained the seven VDP members linked to the case.

The suspects were presented in a district court in Champhai on Monday and have since been remanded to judicial custody at the Champhai district jail, according to police officials.

Lalramenga leaves behind his wife, one son, and four daughters. His funeral took place at his home in Farkawn on Sunday evening following a post-mortem examination.
