Official Selection Process for Asian Games

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) has unveiled the official guidelines for selecting the Indian team for the upcoming Asian Games. This framework details the systematic approach for choosing athletes, coaches, and support personnel, emphasizing that only those listed in the MYAS sanction order will be recognized as part of the official Indian team.

Asian Games 2026 Details

Scheduled to occur in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, the 2026 Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4. The selection of participants is aligned with the policy framework established by MYAS.

Step-by-Step Selection Framework

The selection process follows these steps:

1. **Conducting Selection Trials**: National Sports Federations (NSFs) are responsible for organizing selection trials or using their approved selection methods, adhering to the technical regulations set by their respective International or Asian Federations. These trials are monitored by observers and recorded to ensure transparency.

2. **Preparation of Probable List**: After the trials, each NSF compiles a recommended list of athletes, coaches, and support staff based on the results and eligibility criteria, which is then sent to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

3. **Submission to MYAS**: The IOA, acting as the National Olympic Committee, forwards the discipline-specific recommendations from the NSFs to MYAS for review and sanction.

4. **Examination by SAI**: MYAS sends the recommended list to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for a thorough review against MYAS guidelines, Asian Games selection criteria, performance standards, and eligibility requirements. SAI then submits its recommendations back to MYAS.

5. **Final Approval by MYAS**: MYAS conducts a final review of the list from SAI. Upon completion, the list is submitted for approval by the Competent Authority. Once approved, MYAS issues the official Sanction Order, which defines the official Indian contingent for the Asian Games.

Clarification on Final Contingent

It is essential to clarify that any list released by an NSF following its selection trials is merely a recommendation and does not represent the final government-approved Indian contingent.

- The names put forward by the NSF are subject to further scrutiny by the IOA, examination by SAI, and final approval from MYAS.

- Only those athletes, coaches, and support staff whose names appear in the Sanction Order issued by MYAS will be recognized as members of the official Indian contingent for the Asian Games.
