Security Forces Urge Peace in Manipur Amid Rising Tensions

Imphal, June 7: In response to recent violence, security forces in Manipur's Ukhrul district have called on local village leaders and civil society groups to educate young people about the dangers of being swayed by violent events occurring in other regions. This initiative follows a tragic incident where three civilians lost their lives in a gun attack in the adjacent Kangpokpi district.
As part of their efforts, security personnel initiated a combing operation on Saturday, focusing on areas around Litan, Mahadev, and Sinakeithel, as well as key highway routes in the predominantly Tangkhul Naga Ukhrul district, which borders the Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district.
Authorities reported that joint patrols were conducted in villages shared by both communities, leading to the identification and dismantling of several bunkers in the vicinity.
The police statement emphasized the importance of collaboration with village authorities and civil society organizations, assuring them of the security forces' presence to mitigate any potential threats. They were also encouraged to guide their youth against engaging in violence influenced by external incidents.
Coffin Rally in Memory of Victims
On the same day, a significant number of mourners participated in a 35-km coffin rally from the Kangpokpi district headquarters to the Martyrs' Cemetery in Phaijang, where the three victims were laid to rest amidst emotional tributes and a district-wide shutdown.
The funeral procession, which included community leaders, civil society representatives, church members, and local residents, traversed multiple locations before arriving at Phaijang.

Organizers stated that the rally served as both a tribute to the deceased and a call for increased attention to the security challenges faced in the hill district.
During the gathering, Lun Kipgen, a spokesperson for the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), described the rally as a symbolic act aimed at raising awareness of the security issues confronting the Kuki-Zo community on both national and international platforms.
“This gesture is meant to highlight the security concerns and hardships faced by the Kuki-Zo community since May 2023,” Kipgen remarked.
He pointed out that the recent killings marked the second significant tragedy for the community within a month, referencing the murder of three Kuki-Zo church pastors on May 13.
Kipgen urged that these recurring incidents should be recognized as serious security threats by both state and central authorities.
Despite the sorrow and loss, he noted that the Kuki-Zo community has opted for a peaceful approach. “We received the bodies of the deceased with dignity and humility, reflecting our Christian values and commitment to peaceful coexistence,” he concluded.
