Security Forces on High Alert in Srinagar Amid Protests Following Khamenei's Death
Security Measures in Srinagar
On Friday morning, security forces in Lal Chowk, Srinagar, were placed on high alert. This precautionary measure was taken in response to protests by Shia Muslims against the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Following the airstrikes that resulted in the death of Iran's supreme leader on February 28, demonstrations erupted across India targeting the United States and Israel.
On Wednesday, the Shia community held peaceful protests in Srinagar to mourn Khamenei's passing.
Protests Across Regions
Earlier, protests also occurred in Bandipora and Ramban. In Ramban, demonstrators chanted slogans such as 'How many Hussainis will you kill... every home will produce a Hussaini.' During the protests, they burned an effigy of U.S. President Donald Trump. In Bandipora, protesters carried images of the deceased religious leader, expressing their grief and condemnation. Similar protests had previously taken place in Budgam and Srinagar in response to the assassination of Iran's supreme leader.
Condolences from Indian Officials
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed a condolence book at the Iranian embassy in New Delhi, expressing deep sorrow over Khamenei's death on behalf of the Indian government. During his visit, Misri conveyed India's message of condolence to Mohammad Fathali, Iran's ambassador to India. The Iranian embassy also lowered its flag to half-mast in honor of the country's supreme leader.
Rising Tensions in the Region
This incident occurred amidst escalating tensions in West Asia following a joint military attack by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian soil, which resulted in the deaths of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures, prompting a strong reaction from Tehran.
