Heightened Security Measures in Jammu and Kashmir

In Jammu and Kashmir, security agencies are on high alert due to attempts at infiltration by terrorists and Pakistan-backed groups ahead of Independence Day. On Wednesday, the army thwarted an infiltration attempt in the Uri sector of Baramulla district along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in the tragic loss of a brave soldier. The operation in the Churunda area is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, a night curfew has been imposed in the Samba district, within a two-kilometer radius of the international border, from 10 PM to 5 AM. This measure aims to assist the Border Security Force (BSF) in their operations and to prevent infiltration attempts from Pakistan. According to the order, movement without valid reasons will be restricted, and legal action will be taken against violators. This area has been frequently used by terrorists from Pakistan to infiltrate into the Jammu region. Officials stated that this decision was made after discussions with various stakeholders for security reasons. It is noteworthy that a night curfew was in place in this border area until the first week of January this year. The new curfew arrangement is intended to bolster security and support BSF operations. An official order issued by Samba District Magistrate Ayushi Sudan indicates that these restrictions will be in effect daily from 10 PM to 5 AM for the next two months, unless lifted earlier. The order specifies that, “This decision has been made in coordination with security agencies to enhance border surveillance and control civilian movement at night to prevent illegal activities.” During the curfew, movement will only be permitted for valid reasons, and individuals must present identification when requested by BSF or police personnel.

Additionally, the anti-terrorism operation ongoing in the Akhal Wan area of Kulgam district has entered its final phase after 13 days. This extensive operation has resulted in the martyrdom of two soldiers and injuries to nine others, while two terrorists have been neutralized. It is noted as one of the longest anti-terror operations in the Kashmir Valley in recent years. Kashmir's Inspector General of Police (IGP) V.K. Birdi informed reporters, “The Akhal operation has reached its final stage.” He mentioned that details of the operation will be shared at an appropriate time.

It is important to note that police and security forces are implementing a multi-layered security arrangement in the valley ahead of Independence Day. Security personnel are deployed from high-rise buildings to the streets in Srinagar. On the other hand, measures such as curfews in border areas, sealing off terrorist hideouts, and constant vigilance demonstrate that Indian security forces are steadfastly engaged in combating Pakistan-sponsored terrorism around the clock.
