Security Forces Intensify Operations in Manipur to Curb Illegal Activities
Ongoing Security Operations in Manipur
In Manipur, security forces are actively working to restore peace and combat illegal activities. On Friday, two separate operations were conducted in the Churachandpur and Chandel districts, resulting in the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and the thwarting of a major drug trafficking attempt.
According to a police statement, suspects were apprehended in the T Bangla MVC area of the Churachandpur police station on Friday. The authorities seized a carbine, a 9mm pistol, 36 bags containing 1,800 kilograms of poppy seeds, and two vehicles from the accused.
Seizures in Chandel District
In a separate operation, security forces uncovered a stash of weapons and explosives in the forest area of Taizang village within the Chakpikarong police station jurisdiction in Chandel district. The recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, four homemade guns with magazines, seven mortars, materials related to IED construction, and five walkie-talkie sets.
Background of Ongoing Operations
Since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur two years ago, security forces have been conducting continuous search operations throughout the state. In May 2023, clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities resulted in over 260 fatalities and left thousands displaced.
Authorities believe that such recoveries will undermine the plans of disruptive elements and help prevent the illegal proliferation of weapons in the region. The police are currently interrogating the two arrested individuals to identify the mastermind behind this network.
