Imphal, July 14: In a recent intelligence-led operation, security forces have apprehended three individuals linked to the July 6 ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Ukhrul district, Manipur. Local residents have voiced their concerns regarding the increased security presence in the area.

The operation targeted the TM Kasom, Litan, and Sikibung regions, as confirmed by the Manipur Police on Tuesday.

According to a police statement, "An intelligence-based operation has been initiated in these areas to capture those responsible for the ambush on security personnel in Ukhrul district on July 6, 2026. Three individuals have been detained."

This operation follows a deadly attack on July 6 at Nungshang Kong along NH-202, where two members of the 40 Assam Rifles, Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman C.M. Singh, lost their lives due to an assault by suspected militants.

Earlier, residents from Thawai and TM Kasom made a public appeal for clarification from local authorities regarding the increased military presence and the movement of Army helicopters in the vicinity over the last day.

They expressed that the lack of official communication has heightened anxiety, especially among vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.

While acknowledging the importance of security forces in maintaining order, residents pointed out that there is no evidence linking the local Tangkhul community to the July 6 incident. They urged the authorities to clarify the nature of the ongoing operation, ensure the safety of innocent civilians, and provide timely updates to mitigate rumors and fear.

A local blogger, Ameipam Awungshi, reported that house-to-house searches have instilled fear among villagers.

"Suddenly, searches began in homes throughout the village, causing inconvenience and panic among the residents. People are particularly frightened, especially women and children," he stated.

In response to these concerns, the Manipur Police emphasized that the operation is focused on capturing those involved in the ambush and reassured that civilian life remains largely unaffected.

The police noted that farming activities are proceeding without interruption, shops are operational, and traffic on NH-202 is being managed effectively.

This intensified operation comes in the wake of a series of attacks on Assam Rifles personnel in the region.

Just a week after the Ukhrul ambush, an improvised explosive device (IED) blast targeted Assam Rifles vehicles near Sukhovi in Nagaland on July 13, resulting in the death of Havildar Mohd Iqbal of 28 Assam Rifles and injuring four others, who are now reported to be stable.

The NSCN/GPRN (NSCN-IM) condemned the Sukhovi explosion as a "cowardly terrorist act," denied any involvement, and called for the identification and prosecution of those responsible.

Authorities have not revealed the identities of the three detainees or their alleged connection to the ambush.
