Militant Arrests in Manipur

In the districts of Bishnupur, Imphal West, and Imphal East, security forces have apprehended five militants linked to three banned organizations on charges of extortion and possession of illegal firearms. This information was disclosed by the police on Monday.

According to officials, a member of the banned 'United National Liberation Front' (UNLF-Pambei) was arrested on Saturday in the Taobul Mayai Leikai area of Bishnupur district. The suspect has been identified as Thoudam Bobby Singh, aged 50.

Authorities reported that a .303 rifle, a magazine, five magazines for various rifles, a grenade, 501 cartridges of different calibers, and other equipment were seized from the accused.

The UNLF (P) had signed a peace agreement with the central government in 2023. However, members of the group have continued to face arrests for extortion, illegal arms possession, and other criminal activities.

Additionally, four more militants were captured from various regions of the state on Sunday. Among those arrested were two militants from the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (City Meitei) and one each from KCP (PWG) and KCP (Ibungo Nangangom group).

The police stated, 'These militant organizations have been heavily involved in extortion activities.' In response, the government has established a joint anti-extortion task force that includes central armed police forces, state police, the army, and Assam Rifles.
