Scott Boland Aims for WTC Final Spot Amidst Tough Competition

Boland's Comeback and WTC Aspirations
Scott Boland, the Australian fast bowler, has declared himself fit for the first time in a year and a half, setting his sights on a return to the national squad for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord's. The 36-year-old is eager to secure his position, especially as he competes with Josh Hazlewood for a spot in the playing XI.
Overcoming Knee Issues: A Focus on Recovery
Boland's recent three-month break from cricket has allowed him to recover from persistent knee issues that plagued him for over a year. After Victoria's second-to-last Sheffield Shield match in March, he refrained from bowling or running for six weeks, concentrating solely on strengthening his knee through gym workouts. This careful rehabilitation has left him feeling stronger and more confident than he has in a long time.
Impressive Past Performances
Despite being named Player of the Match in his last Test against India in Sydney earlier this year, Boland has not played since. He was left out during the Sri Lanka tour as Australia opted for a spin-heavy bowling lineup. His standout performances came during the 2022–23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he claimed 21 wickets at an impressive average of 13 in three Tests while Hazlewood was sidelined.
The Selection Dilemma: Boland vs. Hazlewood
The decision between Boland and Hazlewood presents a significant challenge for the Australian selectors ahead of the WTC final. While Hazlewood has regained his fitness and form, selectors may exercise caution due to his history of injuries in recent Tests. Boland's reliability and consistency could work in his favor if the team opts to rest Hazlewood or choose not to include an allrounder like Beau Webster.
Boland's Lack of Recent Match Play
One potential disadvantage for Boland is his absence from competitive matches. Unlike Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Hazlewood, who have been active in the IPL, Boland has not bowled in months. While IPL bowlers typically bowl only four overs per match, the rhythm and intensity from regular play could give his competitors an edge.
Hazlewood's Experience at Lord's
Another factor working against Boland is his limited experience at Lord's. He was not selected for the 2023 Ashes Test at this venue, while Hazlewood boasts an impressive record there, having taken 13 wickets in three Tests at an average of 26.15. His five wickets during the 2023 Test at Lord's were crucial in securing a historic victory for Australia against England.
Selectors Face a Tough Decision
Despite the stiff competition and external factors, Boland is determined to make a strong case for his selection. "I want to make their decision as tough as possible," he stated, confident that his form, fitness, and past performances speak volumes.
