Schoolgirl's Viral Video Leads to Suspension of HRTC Driver in Himachal Pradesh
Courageous Action by a Student
A brave schoolgirl from Sarkaghat, located in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, has highlighted significant shortcomings in public transportation by sharing a video that criticizes a bus driver's unreasonable behavior.
The video gained rapid traction on social media, prompting the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to take swift action, resulting in the driver's suspension following an initial investigation.
Safety Concerns for Students
The student reported that the bus driver refused to continue along the designated route, claiming the road conditions were poor. This left her with no choice but to walk approximately 5 kilometers to reach her home. The incident has raised alarms regarding the safety of schoolgirls and other passengers relying on public transport in remote regions.
In her video, she questioned the rationale behind the driver's decision, pointing out that buses had previously operated on the same route without issue. She also mentioned persistent delays in morning bus services, which often cause students to arrive late at school.
Addressing Systemic Issues
The student further claimed that when such matters are brought to the attention of officials, they often encounter indifference rather than constructive solutions, revealing a troubling lack of concern for commuters' issues.
Prompt Response from HRTC
In response to the public outcry following the video's release, HRTC management launched an internal review. The driver involved has been suspended immediately, and a comprehensive departmental inquiry has been initiated to determine accountability.
A senior official from the HRTC's Sarkaghat Depot stated that if the road conditions were indeed poor, the driver should have reported this to higher authorities, which he failed to do. The official confirmed that the designated route would be assessed, and if any issues are identified, the Public Works Department will be contacted for necessary repairs.
Additionally, he assured that bus services on this route have now been regularized to avoid further inconvenience for students and the public.
