More than 200 scholars have addressed an open letter to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressing their disapproval of her comments referring to IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti as a 'cow urine expert.' This letter, signed by 215 academics, including vice-chancellors and former vice-chancellors, emphasizes that mocking should not replace rational discourse. The letter articulates their disappointment regarding Priyanka's remarks, regardless of whether they were intended as humor or political rhetoric, as such statements raise concerns that extend beyond an individual.

The Importance of Academic Freedom
The letter further asserts that, like any academic, Professor Kamakoti has the right to present hypotheses, engage in discussions about traditional knowledge, and participate in scientific dialogue. Dismissing a scholar's ideas based on labels rather than their substance risks undermining the scientific reasoning that our Constitution encourages every citizen to develop. Scientific thinking involves not only skepticism towards unconventional ideas but also a willingness to objectively evaluate claims before accepting or rejecting them.
Political Context and Criticism
Kamakoti, a Padma Shri awardee, is also a member of the six-member task force established by the central government to reform examination processes following the NEET paper leak incident. During her speech in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Priyanka suggested that the Prime Minister should consider changing his advisors, as they seem disconnected from reality. She emphasized that merely forming new committees is insufficient, noting that none of the recommendations from the Radhakrishnan Committee have been implemented. The new committee includes a former chief of the Intelligence Bureau, an IT company owner, and even an expert on 'cow urine.'
