Savita Punia Reflects on Her Hockey Journey Ahead of Padma Shri Award Ceremony
Savita Punia's Inspiring Journey in Hockey
Savita Punia, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, shared her joy and pride regarding her hockey career. She reminisced about a time when stepping outside her home was daunting, and pursuing hockey seemed like an unattainable dream. Visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan with her family marked a significant milestone in her life.
Punia highlighted the significance of the FIH Pro League, stating it serves as excellent preparation against top international teams. She expressed optimism about India's chances in the upcoming FIH Hockey Women's World Cup, noting that the team is determined to aim for a gold medal, moving beyond previous podium finishes.
'Our Goal is Gold'
"I am truly delighted as my journey in hockey has been extensive. There was a phase when I hesitated to leave my house, and playing hockey felt far-fetched. Now, being able to visit Rashtrapati Bhavan with my family is incredibly meaningful. Competing in the Pro League is essential for facing the world's elite teams. With the World Cup approaching and our favorable pool placement, we are confident. While we have previously secured silver and bronze, our focus this time is on winning gold," Punia stated.
Padma Awards 2026 Ceremony
In addition to Savita Punia, former Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma and Bhagwandas Raikwar will also be honored with the Padma Shri award. Posthumously, Vladimir Mestvirishvili will receive the Padma Shri, while tennis icon Vijay Amritraj is set to be awarded the Padma Bhushan. The Padma Awards 2026 will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
The second Civil Investiture Ceremony is scheduled for June 23, where a total of 65 Padma Awards will be distributed, including two Padma Vibhushan, seven Padma Bhushan, and 56 Padma Shri awards. The first ceremony took place on May 26, during which 66 Padma Awards were awarded.
