Boosting Morale Before the World Cup

Savita Punia, a prominent figure in Indian women's hockey, has stated that the team's recent victory in the FIH Nations Cup has significantly enhanced their confidence as they prepare for the upcoming FIH Women's Hockey World Cup. She emphasized that the competitive nature of the Nations Cup demonstrated their ability to compete with the world's elite teams.

World Cup Details

The FIH Women's Hockey World Cup is scheduled to occur from August 14 to 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands. The Indian women's team is placed in Pool D alongside China, England, and South Africa, with their opening match against China on August 16 in Amstelveen. Historically, India's best performance was a fourth-place finish in 1974, while they secured eighth and ninth places in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, respectively.

Significance of Nations Cup Victory

In a recent interview on JioStar, Savita remarked, "Winning the FIH Nations Cup was a significant milestone as it featured all the top teams. The competitive environment of the tournament and our success have greatly uplifted our morale, and securing a gold medal after a long time has strengthened our belief in ourselves."

"In recent competitions like the FIH Pro League, we have had close encounters with top teams such as Argentina, Netherlands, and Germany. These matches have shown us that we can compete with the best. I firmly believe that while all teams are world-class, we possess the skill, fitness, and mindset to challenge anyone on our day," she added.

Leading the Charge in Her Third World Cup

Savita expressed that participating in her third World Cup holds great significance for her. As a senior player, she aims to "lead by example, maintain composure under pressure, and assist the team in achieving peak performance."

"Competing in the World Cup is a dream for any hockey player, and being part of my third consecutive tournament is a remarkable achievement. I have dedicated immense effort to reach this point, and with each edition, I strive to give my best. My experience this time around boosts my confidence, and I aim to guide the team effectively," she stated.

Commending Skipper Salima Tete

Savita also praised their captain, Salima Tete, calling her a "remarkable player and an aggressive midfielder." She highlighted Salima's speed as a crucial asset that applies early pressure on opponents.

"Her quickness is a significant advantage, especially during penalty corner defense. She has a keen understanding of the game and applies pressure on the opposition from the start. As senior players, we support her in keeping the team cohesive and focused. She values the input of senior players, seeks guidance when necessary, and fosters strong team connections. Together with vice-captain Navneet Kaur, she plays a vital role in leading the team forward and ensuring unity," Savita noted.

Team's Focus and Preparation

Salima mentioned that the team is entering the tournament with high confidence, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their own performance, as there are no easy matches in a World Cup. She is optimistic about their strengths and aims to help the team reach the podium.

"We are committed to hard work every day, both individually and collectively. Our approach has evolved; players now take ownership of their fitness and recovery. We prioritize diet, injury prevention, and additional training sessions. As goalkeepers, we often engage in three or four extra sessions weekly, but we remain motivated, knowing it will enhance our performance when it counts the most," she concluded.
