Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Advocates for Greater Recognition of Indian Athletes
Clarifying His Statements
Star Indian doubles badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy addressed concerns regarding his earlier comments about the lack of recognition for Team India's bronze medal win at the Thomas Cup. He emphasized that his statements were not aimed at seeking personal fame or undermining others' achievements. Instead, he aims to promote a culture that acknowledges and celebrates every victory, regardless of its size.
India's Thomas Cup Journey
In the semifinals of the Thomas Cup 2026 held in Horsens, Denmark, India faced a 3-0 defeat against France, ending their hopes of reclaiming the title they won in 2022. Upon returning home, the Indian team did not receive a significant welcome from fans.
The Controversial 'No One Cares' Comment
On his Instagram, Satwiksairaj expressed disappointment, stating, "Back home now. As usual, no one knows what happened over the past two weeks, and it seems like no one really cares." His doubles partner, Chirag Shetty, echoed these sentiments, noting that India is not yet a sporting nation that adequately celebrates its athletes. He highlighted the lack of awareness among fans regarding the significance of India's Thomas Cup victory in 2022.
A Call for Support
In response to the backlash from some sports fans, Satwiksairaj clarified his intent, stating, "The last few days have brought a lot of attention to my recent comments regarding the lack of a reception for our Thomas Cup bronze medal. While I appreciate the support, I want to clarify my intent because I see many people deviating from the original point." He reiterated his respect for all athletes who bring pride to India, regardless of their sport, and stressed the importance of fostering a culture that celebrates every achievement.
He added that when such accomplishments are met with silence, it is disheartening not only for current athletes but also for future generations. "We do not want money or grand parades; we just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are seen. Let us unite to support all sports with equal enthusiasm. Next time, let it not be about who won more or less, but about celebrating everyone who wears the India jersey. Thank you for standing by me. Let's keep playing for India," he concluded.
