A New Satirical Installation on the National Mall

A large satirical statue representing a participation trophy for former President Donald Trump was unveiled on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Monday. This artwork serves as a critique of the Trump administration's approach to the ongoing conflict with Iran. An attached plaque humorously states: "We hereby award President Donald J. Trump this participation trophy for his enthusiastic involvement in the Iran War." It further notes, "While some focus on military strategy, diplomacy, or tangible results, President Trump showed the bravery to engage, irrespective of the outcome." The plaque also mentions, "As the recipient of this esteemed award, President Trump joins the ranks of children everywhere who received acknowledgment for merely showing up." Visitors are encouraged to leave their own participation trophies around the statue, with smaller trophies already placed nearby.

This installation was created by an anonymous group of artists known as Secret Handshake, who have previously staged various satirical displays in Washington during Trump's presidency. In response to the artwork, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly criticized the artists, stating, "These untalented 'artists' should focus on their unattractive 'art' and avoid commenting on foreign policy, which they clearly lack knowledge about, given that the United States Military accomplished all its goals during Operation Epic Fury." Secret Handshake has also produced other satirical pieces in the capital, including a gold toilet throne that mocked plans for a White House ballroom, an arcade-style video game cabinet parodying the administration's messaging regarding the Iran conflict, and a statue of Trump holding hands with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The participation trophy installation also highlights Trump's long-standing fascination with international accolades. Throughout his first year back in office, he expressed a strong desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Reports indicate that a leaked message from January revealed him telling Norway's prime minister: "Considering your country decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 wars, I no longer feel obligated to think solely of peace, although it will always be a priority, but can now consider what is beneficial and appropriate for the United States of America." Earlier this year, FIFA awarded Trump a newly established FIFA Peace Prize. This installation emerges as the Trump administration continues to justify its management of the Iran conflict. While the White House claims that the U.S. has met its military objectives, hostilities have persisted following the collapse of a tentative peace agreement. Recently, the administration formally informed Congress that military operations had resumed.
