Sardar Singh Reflects on Pakistan's Exit from Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026
Sardar Singh Comments on Pakistan's Withdrawal
In light of Pakistan's decision to withdraw from the Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, former Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh remarked that the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan has diminished. He attributed this change to India's strong performances and victories over Pakistan in recent years. Singh stated, "The essence of the rivalry has faded. Pakistan's choice to not participate in the tournament won't significantly impact us, as we've consistently performed well against them in our last 15 to 25 matches."
Recent Performance Overview
Historically, India and Pakistan have had a fierce hockey rivalry. However, in their last 20 encounters since 2016, India has emerged victorious in 18 matches, with Pakistan failing to secure a win. The remaining two matches ended in draws. Their latest clash occurred during the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games, where India triumphed with a score of 4-3. Following Pakistan's withdrawal, Bangladesh will take their place in the men's Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, which is set to take place from October 27 to November 5.
Importance of the Tournament and Local Engagement
Singh expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, emphasizing the chance for local players from Punjab to showcase their skills in front of a home audience. He highlighted the importance of maintaining India's top ranking in Asia and noted that young hockey fans would benefit from witnessing elite players live. "This tournament is a significant event after eight to ten years, and we anticipate a thrilling competition. For players from Punjab, especially those who began their careers in Jalandhar, it’s a fantastic opportunity to play before their families and local supporters. As the top-ranked team in Asia, we must perform well and seize this chance. Young players will gain invaluable insights by watching their heroes compete live," he remarked.
Significance of the Tournament in Punjab
The tournament is particularly meaningful as it marks the return of international hockey to Punjab, a region renowned for its contributions to the sport and its legacy of producing legendary players. Matches will be held in Jalandhar and Mohali, showcasing some of Asia's best hockey talent in an area deeply connected to the game. As defending champions, India aims to build on their past successes, having won the Asian Champions Trophy five times, making them the most successful team in the tournament's history.
