Confident Journey to the Commonwealth Games

Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, an Indian hurdler supported by the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), is heading into the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a strong sense of confidence. His recent international performances, including participation in the Paris Olympics and the Asian Athletics Championships, have bolstered his belief.

At 28 years old, Santhosh was part of India's 4x400m relay team at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He has had a remarkable season in 2026, securing a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles and a gold in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Athletics Championships, while also achieving a personal best time of 49.06 seconds. Earlier this year, he triumphed at the Indian Athletics Series held in Thiruvananthapuram, showcasing the consistency that has characterized his recent performances, as noted in a press release from IIS.

A New Challenge Awaits

With a series of impressive international results under his belt, Santhosh is now gearing up for the Commonwealth Games, aiming to maintain the momentum he has built over the past two seasons. As India's athletics team prepares to make a significant impact in Glasgow, the Tamil Nadu hurdler is determined to deliver his best performance on this major international platform. Reflecting on his journey, Santhosh emphasizes that each competition is a new challenge. He stated, "The last two years have been crucial for my growth as an athlete. Competing at the Olympics and excelling at the Asian Championships has greatly boosted my confidence, but every championship is a fresh start. The Commonwealth Games is another chance to represent India, and my focus is on executing my race to the best of my ability without overthinking the outcome."

Support from Inspire Institute of Sport

Santhosh attributes much of his preparation for the Commonwealth Games to the robust support system at the Inspire Institute of Sport. He acknowledges that the institute has allowed him to concentrate fully on his athletic development. "My preparation has been excellent leading up to the Commonwealth Games. The time spent at the Inspire Institute of Sport has enhanced my skills in various areas, including technical work, strength and conditioning, recovery, and sports science. At this level, minor improvements can lead to significant results, and the encouragement from my coaches and support staff at IIS instills a lot of confidence in me. It enables me to focus entirely on my training and approach competitions feeling well-prepared," he remarked.

Embracing the Journey

Over the past year, Santhosh has consistently improved his timings, achieving a personal best of 49.06 seconds this season. He emphasizes the importance of trusting the process. "Every season brings new lessons. This year, I've managed to enhance my timings and maintain consistency, which boosts my confidence. However, I don't dwell on personal bests after a race. The ultimate goal is continuous improvement, as that's essential for competing with the world's top athletes. I enjoy this journey and aim to keep building on it," he explained.

Pride in National Representation

As he prepares to don the Indian jersey once more, Santhosh expresses that representing his country is the greatest honor of his career. "Wearing the Indian colors is always a source of immense pride for any athlete. Each time I step onto the track, I know I'm competing for something far greater than myself. I am thankful to my family, coaches, and everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. At the Commonwealth Games, my goal is to give my all on the track and make my country proud," he stated.

With an Olympic experience already behind him and a stellar season propelling him into Glasgow, Santhosh is eager to continue his upward trajectory. The Commonwealth Games offer him another chance to solidify his position among the continent's elite 400m hurdlers while marking another significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
