Sanju Samson's Stellar Performance Leads India to T20 World Cup Semi-Finals
Samson's Remarkable Innings
Sanju Samson's explosive unbeaten score of 97 against the West Indies propelled India into the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup for the sixth time. Former Indian cricketer and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed his admiration for both Samson's batting skills and Jasprit Bumrah's impressive bowling, which included two wickets in a single over.
Nayar Discusses Samson's Comeback
During a segment on Star Sports, Nayar highlighted how Samson finally seized his opportunity after a prolonged wait. He remarked, "Sanju's innings was nothing short of phenomenal. His journey over the past few years has been quite tumultuous. After scoring centuries in South Africa, he found himself dropped to number five. His performance in Australia was not up to par, as that position did not suit him. However, he persevered and earned his spot back in the Indian team, eventually making it to the T20 World Cup squad, only to be replaced by Ishan Kishan."
"He was eager to reclaim his position. After just one match against Namibia in the group stage, he finally got a chance against Zimbabwe, where he scored some runs, leading to this remarkable innings of 97. His approach was notably different this time—more calculated, controlled, yet aggressive," Nayar added.
Crucial Partnerships in India's Chase
In pursuit of a daunting target of 196 runs, India found themselves at 41/2 during the powerplay. A vital 58-run partnership between Samson and Suryakumar Yadav (who scored 18) helped stabilize the innings. Samson then formed crucial partnerships with Tilak Varma (27 runs off 15 balls, including four boundaries and a six), Hardik Pandya (17), and Shivam Dube (8 not out), leading India to a five-wicket victory.
Bumrah's Game-Changing Over
Nayar also commended Jasprit Bumrah for his pivotal role in the match, particularly in one over. Reintroduced in the 12th over, Bumrah took the wickets of Shimron Hetmyer (27 off 12 balls) and Roston Chase (40 off 25 balls) with a clever slower delivery. Nayar stated, "Jasprit Bumrah is like a cheat code. Whether with the new ball, in the middle overs, or at the death, he consistently delivers. Dismissing Hetmyer, who was looking dangerous, was crucial. Executing a length ball to take a wicket is a challenging task for any fast bowler."
"His brilliant slow ball to dismiss Roston Chase effectively shattered the West Indies' batting lineup. Taking out two well-set batters in one over can severely demoralize the opposition. Bumrah was exceptional as always," he concluded.
Bumrah finished with figures of 2/36 in four overs, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Hardik Pandya both recorded 1/40 in their respective four-over spells. India restricted the West Indies to 195/4 after opting to bowl first.
Upcoming Semi-Final Against England
