New Delhi, March 13: Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla believes that the pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium will complement Sanju Samson's batting style as he prepares for his inaugural season with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Samson enters the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) following impressive performances in the recent ICC T20 World Cup, where he achieved consecutive half-centuries in matches against the West Indies, England, and New Zealand during the Super8s and semi-finals. Chawla considers this form a significant advantage for CSK.

“Sanju Samson is a match-winner in his own right. He silenced his critics with three impactful innings during the T20 World Cup. CSK fans can rejoice as he has found his form just before the IPL. The conditions in Chennai will certainly favor his playing style,” Chawla remarked on JioHotstar.

Samson's Trade and Role

Samson was traded from the Rajasthan Royals to CSK, replacing Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. With 177 IPL matches under his belt, he has amassed 4707 runs at an average of 30.95.

Addressing CSK's Opening Issues

Chawla emphasized that Samson's aggressive batting approach could resolve CSK's struggles with slow starts. He suggested that Samson will likely open alongside India's U19 captain Ayush Mhatre, who showed promise last season.

“His aggressive style will greatly benefit CSK. Last season, they faced challenges in scoring quickly at the start. The arrival of Ayush Mhatre improved their powerplay runs. With Samson now in the mix, their opening woes should be resolved. His trade to CSK is set to be a game-changer,” he added.
